Other Ways to Install Filestar
The installer from the download page is the easiest way to get Filestar. If you would rather install it another way, these work today.
Windows: winget
winget is the package manager built into Windows 10 and 11. In a terminal, run:
winget install Filestar.Filestar
This installs the Filestar app and puts the Filestar CLI (filestarcli) on your PATH, without showing the installer's window. To install it only for you, without administrator rights, add --scope user:
winget install Filestar.Filestar --scope user
Filestar keeps itself up to date however it was installed (see How to Update Filestar). You can also update it through winget:
winget upgrade Filestar.Filestar
macOS: Homebrew
If you use Homebrew, run this in Terminal:
brew install --cask filestar/tap/filestar
This installs the Filestar app and the Filestar CLI (filestarcli). Homebrew asks for your Mac's password once, because the Filestar package installs for every user of the Mac. Filestar keeps itself up to date after that, so Homebrew does not update it. To remove Filestar again, run:
brew uninstall --cask filestar
Linux
Filestar for Linux is an AppImage that contains both the app and the CLI. See Linux for how to download, run and verify it.
For a server or any machine without a desktop, there is also a download with only the command line: see the command line only.
The command line
For what the Filestar CLI can do and how to use it, see Filestar CLI.
Older systems
If your computer runs a version of Windows or macOS that the current release no longer supports, see older systems for the last release that still runs there.
More on the way
More ways to install Filestar, such as Chocolatey, npm and the .NET tool, are coming and will be added to this page when they are available.
