Claude Desktop

Claude Desktop uses Filestar through the MCP server that comes with the Filestar CLI (filestarcli mcp). Claude Desktop starts it when it starts and calls its tools when a task needs them.

Next release. filestarcli agent install, agent readme and mcp are not in the released CLI (npm filestar 30.5.1); they arrive with the next release. Until then this page describes what is coming. See Use Filestar With AI Agents.

Add it

filestarcli agent install --agent claude-desktop

Or add it by hand. Open Claude Desktop's configuration file (in Claude Desktop: Settings › Developer › Edit Config):

System File
Windows %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
macOS ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

and add filestar under mcpServers, keeping any servers that are already there:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "filestar": {
      "command": "filestarcli",
      "args": ["mcp"]
    }
  }
}

Claude Desktop does not always see the same PATH as your terminal. If Filestar does not start, use the full path to the CLI as command: run where filestarcli (Windows) or which filestarcli (macOS) in a terminal to find it. On Windows the Filestar app installs it as C:\Program Files\Filestar\FilestarCli.exe; in JSON, write each backslash twice. With the npm install you can also use "command": "npx" and "args": ["-y", "filestar", "mcp"].

Restart Claude Desktop

Quit Claude Desktop completely (on Windows, also from the icon in the notification area) and open it again. It reads the configuration only when it starts.

Then ask:

Convert the HEIC photos in my Downloads folder to JPG.

Claude asks for permission the first time it uses a Filestar tool.

Remove it

filestarcli agent uninstall --agent claude-desktop

or delete the filestar entry from the file and restart Claude Desktop.
