Claude Code
Claude Code gets Filestar as a skill: a short SKILL.md file that tells Claude when to use Filestar and how to run filestarcli. Claude reads it only when a task needs it, so it costs little context.
Add the skill
filestarcli agent install --agent claude-codeThis writes the skill to:
| System | Location |
|---|---|
| Windows | %USERPROFILE%\.claude\skills\filestar\SKILL.md |
| macOS and Linux | ~/.claude/skills/filestar/SKILL.md |
The CLI shows the file before it writes it. The skill points Claude at filestarcli agent readme for the full instructions, so it stays correct when the CLI is updated.
If you prefer the MCP server in Claude Code as well, or instead, run:
claude mcp add filestar -- filestarcli mcpUse one or the other, not both: two ways to do the same thing make the agent choose.
Check that Claude sees it
Start a new Claude Code session (skills are read when a session starts) and ask:
Which skills do you have?
Filestar should be in the list. If it is not, check that the file exists at the location above and that filestarcli version works in a new terminal.
Example session
Convert the HEIC photos in ~/Downloads to JPG.
Claude runs something like:
filestarcli detect ~/Downloads/*.heic --json
filestarcli -i ~/Downloads/IMG_0412.heic -c "convert to jpg" --json --user-agent claude-codeand answers with the paths of the JPG files it wrote. On the free runs Claude converts one file per run; with a plan it can pass a whole folder at once.
Remove it
filestarcli agent uninstall --agent claude-code
