Codex
Codex gets Filestar as a skill: a SKILL.md file that tells Codex when to use Filestar and how to run filestarcli.
Add the skill
filestarcli agent install --agent codexThis writes the skill to:
| System | Location |
|---|---|
| Windows | %USERPROFILE%\.codex\skills\filestar\SKILL.md |
| macOS and Linux | ~/.codex/skills/filestar/SKILL.md |
The CLI shows the file before it writes it. The skill points Codex at filestarcli agent readme, so it stays correct when the CLI is updated.
Or the MCP server
If you want the MCP server in Codex instead, choose MCP Server when agent install asks (or pass --kind mcp). It adds this section to ~/.codex/config.toml:
[mcp_servers.filestar]
command = "filestarcli"
args = ["mcp"]Use the skill or the MCP server, not both.
Check that Codex sees it
Start a new Codex session and ask:
Which skills do you have?
Filestar should be listed. If it is not, check that the file exists and that filestarcli version works in a new terminal.
Example session
Compress the PDFs in this folder.
Codex runs filestarcli skills -i report.pdf --json to see what Filestar can do with the file, then something like:
filestarcli -i report.pdf -c "compress" --json --user-agent codexand tells you where the smaller file is.
Codex runs commands in a sandbox. If a conversion fails with a network error on the first run, allow network access for that command: Filestar downloads the plugin for a skill the first time it is used.
Remove it
filestarcli agent uninstall --agent codex
