VS Code

In VS Code, GitHub Copilot's agent mode uses Filestar through the MCP server that comes with the Filestar CLI (filestarcli mcp).

Add it

filestarcli agent install --agent vs-code

Or add it by hand. In VS Code, run MCP: Open User Configuration from the Command Palette. This opens your user mcp.json. Add filestar under servers, keeping any servers that are already there:

For one workspace only, put the same entry in .vscode/mcp.json in the workspace instead.

If VS Code cannot start the server, use the full path to the CLI as command (where filestarcli on Windows, which filestarcli on macOS and Linux), or "command": "npx" with "args": ["-y", "filestar", "mcp"].

Start it

VS Code shows a Start link above the entry in mcp.json; or reload the window. In the Chat view, switch to Agent mode and open the tools list: Filestar's tools should be there. Then ask:

Convert docs/diagram.svg to PNG.

Remove it

filestarcli agent uninstall --agent vs-code
