- Description
- An OGG file is a compressed audio file that uses free, unpatented Ogg Vorbis audio compression. It is similar to an .MP3 file, but sounds better than an MP3 file of equal size, and may include song metadata, such as artist information and track data. OGG files are supported by many software music players and some portable music players.

Vorbis is a free and open-source software founded by the Xiph.Org Foundation. The audio file is mostly used with the Ogg container format. People who strongly support Free_software are the persons who are most familiar with the Vorbis file format. It is commonly used in place of restricted, patented file formats.
Ogg Vorbis is a multipurpose compressed audio format used for mid and high-quality music and audio. The file format uses bitrates, which range from 16 to 128 kbps/channel. It is in the same category as other audio files such as MPEG-4 Audio and PAC. Availability of transparency in data compression at lower bitrates is a feature that makes the format so much better.
Most video games like World of Warcraft and Amnesia: The Dark Descent, use the Ogg format to store in-game audio. Renowned software players support Vorbis either directly or indirectly by the use of external Plug-in.
The file bitstream format has been frozen since 8th May 2000. The freezing led to a compatible bitstream of the file been developed with all other features of the data. The audio file performs better than most other audio files in the market. The aim is to be better than MP3. It uses lossy compression to produce smaller files. The data generated by the Vorbis format are of high quality, unlike data by Advanced Audio Coding and Windows Media Audio.
The file format is used by websites like Wikipedia and Mindawn. Bandcamp (the American music site) and Qobuz, the French music site, also allow their clients to download songs in Vorbis format.
