stx is a file type used by DataStitch, a software used to create embroidery designs. It contains the design elements, which can be edited and tweaked before being exported to other formats for use with embroidery machines.
An EXP file is an embroidery CAM (computer aided manufacturing) file saved in the Melco EXP format. It contains codes that tell the needle of a commercial sewing machine how to create an embroidery. EXP files may also be saved in the Bernina USB EXP format, which is used for embroideries made by personal sewing machines.
