Virtual Hard Disk v2 (VHDX) is Microsoft's disk image format for Hyper-V, the successor to VHD: it can be up to 64 TB, survives interrupted writes with its log, and stores its virtual disk in dynamically growing blocks.
VMDK files make up a virtual disk. The size of the virtuals disk determines the number of the vmdk files in it.
