- Timed Text Markup Language (TTML) is an XML-based subtitle and caption format standardised by the W3C. It stores the text of each caption together with its timing, position and styling, and is used for broadcast, streaming and online video.
- SubStation Alpha (ASS) is a text-based file format used for subtitle files. It is mostly used for anime, but can be used for any type of video. It is a plain-text format and can be opened with any text editor, such as Notepad. It allows for the creation of more complex subtitles than plain text, such as color-coding, formatting, and timing.
