- A MAT-file holds the variables saved from a MATLAB session: numeric arrays such as matrices and images, text, cell arrays and structs. Files saved with -v7.3 are HDF5 files behind a MATLAB header. Unity and Unreal material files use the .mat extension too, but they are a different format.
- It is a macro-enabled spreadsheet file developed using Microsoft Excel and it holds worksheets arranged in rows and columns. The macros are created using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) language.
