OpenXPS file (OXPS) is a document saved using the Open XML paper specifications. The format stores information about the structure and content of the text. The information about the documents is stored in a format that resembles the PDF style. It was developed by Microsoft and is used in saving business documents, letters, postcards, and essays.
Microsoft developed the file format to succeed the EMF (Enhanced Metafile) file format. Ecma international then standardized the format in June 2009. They also closely resemble PDFs and are used for publishing, sharing, and distributing data that is in a fixed layout. It is also associated with the XPS file format though the OXPS is regarded as an open format.
The file format has some unique features compared to the PDF format. OXPS files are stored with both their specifications and their printing layout features. The files using OXPS format are referred to as containers—the information in these files is in different types of content presented in the form of papers.
Windows 8 has inbuilt tools that support the .oxps file formats. Microsoft XPS viewer, Page mark XPS viewer, Microsoft word 2011, and 2013 and NIXPS View programs can open the OXPS files.
