FictionBook 2.0 File (FB2) is an e-book fiction file format initially developed in Russia. Contrary to other book-file formats that comprise of various XML files, FB2 is based on a single XML file, which is inclusive of all the content and information. It’s made up of unique tags that describe all the elements of the book. It was initially meant for fictional texts but can be used for any other eBook literature.
It sores metadata, Unicode, and book content. This file format supports things like appearance, flexibility, indexing, and automatic processing. FB2 is mainly concerned with describing its structure and not its appearance like other files. The concern on its construction has made it useful on conversion to other formats. It uses the .fb2 file extension, and some of its files are Zip compressed. The compressed files make it easier to transfer data over the internet.
The FB2 is DRM free and supports the free and open format, which has multiple hardware and software implementations. The documents in these files are organized in nested sections and comprise of subtitles, raster images, epigraphs, references, and footnotes.
E-book readers like FBReader, AlReader, Haali Reader, STDU Viewer, CoolReader, and fly reader, among others, support the FB2 file format. All platforms have an FB2 file reader.
