Eine JP2-Datei ist ein komprimiertes Bitmap-Bild, das mit JPEG 2000 Core Coding erstellt wurde. Es verwendet einen Wavelet-Komprimierungsalgorithmus anstelle der DCT-Komprimierung (diskrete Kosinustransformation), die bei standardmäßigen JPEG-Bildern zum Einsatz kommt. JP2-Dateien können sowohl verlustbehaftet als auch verlustfrei komprimiert gespeichert werden.
