Es gehört zur Netpbm-Sammlung, die verschiedene Formate für portable Graustufen-, Farb- und Bitmap-Bilder umfasst. PPMA-Dateien speichern Farbbilder als ASCII-Text, der Breite, Höhe, maximalen Farbwert sowie die Pixelwerte anhand ihrer Rot-, Grün- und Blauanteile beschreibt. Das Format ist auf Einfachheit und einen unkomplizierten Austausch zwischen verschiedenen Computersystemen ausgelegt.
