Developed by created by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), Extensible Markup Language (XML) gives rules that are used in encoding electronic documents that can be read by both humans and machines. The XML format is mainly concerned with usability across the internet, simplicity, and generality. It supports unicode for various human Languages.
XML also acts as a representation of data structures used in serving the web. XML gives the rules of the tags in the files with no specifications beyond that. It was designed to curb the limitations of HTML as it is easier to code compared to HTML.
The use of traditional compressional tools compresses the XML files. They use GZip, PPM, or bzip2 compression algorithm to compress the files. The .xml file extension is used. Since its release, XML has gained popularity due to its outstanding performance. Many applications can use XML as it is easily portable and highly compatible with Java.
One can only open and edit XML files directly on a text editor or a browser. Thanks to its extendable feature that allows the creation of multiple tags, the format has been supported by various web browsers. This includes Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, internet explorer, safari, Microsoft Edge, and Opera. Microsoft products and Netscape internally use the XML file format.
