- Description
- X3D (Extensible 3D) is a royalty-free open standard file format used to represent 3D computer graphics. It is used to store and interchange 3D model data, including surface geometry, color, animation, and metadata. X3D files are built on the XML standard, and can be viewed and edited with a variety of 3D modeling programs.

X3D is an XML-based format that represents and communicates 3D information. The format closely resembles the VRML format as it is an improved version of it. It supports both 2D and 3D graphics. Web3D Consortium developed and maintains the X3D format. Navigation, animation, and computer-assisted designs are some of the functions of this format. It allows previewing of 3D models before one can download them. X3DOM allows viewing of the models in a browser. Compared to other formats like the STL, the X3D allows encoding of color information. The objects can also be used to display 3D models on your website by inserting them into an X3D viewer. Compression of the X3D Binary Encoding uses the Iso Fast Infoset(FI) standard of compression. This compression allows the CBE to maintain some power over other X3D scene encodings. They have a simple file structure; file header, the start of the X3D, head section, scene graph, and end of the X3D note. The file format is used in various hardware devices. They can also be used in engineering, web pages, entertainment, training, simulation, and even medical visualization. X3D software is needed to open these files.
