WP is a word processing application, originally developed under contract at Brigham Young University for use in a Data General minicomputer in the late 1970s. It was a dominant player in the word-processor market, displacing its predecessor, the WordStar.
Its dominant position ended after a failed release for Microsoft Windows, followed by an extended delay before introducing an improved version. Then Microsoft Word was developed at the same time in a superior version. Word rapidly took over the market, and WordPerfect Corporation was sold to Novell in 1994, which then sold the product to Corel in 1996.
Since 1996, Corel has made regular releases such as Quattro Pro spreadsheet, Presentations slides format, and other applications, most of which are in the form of office suites under the WordPerfect name.
WordPerfect document (WPD) allows the extensive use of function key combinations (like Ctrl—Shift—F6), especially on the MS-DOS platform, hence enabling quick access to features. It has a streaming code file format, Reveal Codes feature, and number lines as the legal profession requires. It also has a scripting capability, which is now provided through PerfectScript.
Additionally, WordPerfect eases the use of tools like Mail Merge, which combines form documents with data from any data source, “Print as booklet,” and tables with spreadsheets and graphical capabilities.
It has been enriched with properties from the CorelDraw Graphics suite, making graphic styles editable. Graphics Styles editor enables the customization of the appearance of boxes, borders, lines and fills, and stores this new design for reuse. WordPerfect was consequently included in CorelDraw Graphics Suite as the text editor with full functionality.
