True Type Font (TTF) is an Apple-developed standard outline font. It was developed in the late '80s to mainly compete with Adobe's Type 1 font that is used in PostScript. The file format gave control to its developers as they could control how they were displayed in terms of pixels. However, pixel control is no longer offered thanks to the evolving technology.
The compression of the TTF file does not lead to the loss of quality. It supports change of size into any desired style while still retaining the one that appears when it is printed on the screens. For this reason, TTF files have gathered massive support. The file works by changing the descriptions into raster images that are ready for either printing or viewing.
TTF was licensed to Microsoft by Apple for free. This saw Microsoft use it in their operating systems besides working too hard to achieve the best quality. Adoption by Microsoft led to the widespread use of the TTF file. The file format comprises of tables placed at the beginning of the files with a directory in them.
It is popular with both Windows, Classic Mac OS, and Mac OS platforms. Apple Color Emoji also use the .ttf file extension.
