Tagged Image Files(TIF or TIFF) is a raster image file for high-quality graphics. It was developed in 1986 to help all companies adopt a standard file rather than multiple files. When It was first developed, it only supported black and white images before its upgrade In 1988 to a color palate. The file format is currently used for high-color depth images and its now owned by Adobe.
TIF is an adaptable and flexible file format that holds data and images in the same file, including the header tags. TIF is now capable of holding data that is of high pixels with images higher than 8bits. This file feature gave tif the consideration of holding scientific images.
The file container can hold both the lossy (JPEG) and lossless (PackBits) images, which are compressed. Its lossless attribute has made the format to be commonly used as an archive for images. It’s images can be edited and saved numerous times without the image losing its quality.
LZW compression is used to reduce the file size but doesn’t reduce the quality of the image. The files might have the .tiff or .tif file extension.
It’s very popular with publishing graphic designers and photographers. It’s supported by almost all scanners, fax machines, printers, desktop publishing, word processing, and page-layout applications.
