Scalable vector graphics file (SVG) format is an XML-based vector image format for 2-D graphics. It’s an open-source format that supports both animation and interactivity. The SVG was developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) in 1999.
The behaviour of the SVG file is defined in the XML file so it can either be indexed, compressed, searched or scripted. Being XML files, they can created and edited using a drawing software or a text editor.
SVG files may contain vector graphics shapes (straight lines and curves), texts, and bitmap images. In 2011, it was updated to version 1.1 which included two mobile compatible profiles. The SVG Basic and SVG Tiny with minimal computational and display capabilities.
Despite the fact that SVG is mainly designed for vector graphics markup language, it also has the basic abilities of a pages like Adobe’s PDF. As a result, the SVG can be used for styling thanks to its compatibility with the CSS.
One of major benefits of using SVG is that it’s interactive and dynamic. Scripting and animations are responsive to mouse or keyboard movements. Also, SVG files are scalable with no loss of image quality regardless of the resolution.
SVG is supported by all the modern browsers including Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, internet explorer, Microsoft Edge and Opera.
