Raw Image Data File (RAW) is the most used file format for images captured using Digital camera, Image scanner, or a Motion picture film scanner. The file comprises of direct image data from the camera sensors, which is of the same condition as it remains unaltered.
The files are named as Raw files because they are not ready for printing or even editing, which is done by the use of Bitmap graphics editor. Images in these files are stored in an internal Colourspace. It is here where adjustments are made before converting them to formats like TIFF or JPEG for storage.
A lot of manufacturers use various raw formats of digital image capture equipment. The RAW images have a more comprehensive dynamic range when compared to developed prints or films. They keep everything captured during the time of exposure, so they occupy vast storage space.
Digital photography uses RAW files in Photographic films to play in film photography. These RAW files have a high resolution that ranges from 12-14 bit, and thus they can read data from the camera’s image sensor pixels. Things like white balance, sharpness, color Saturation, and Contrast are easily controlled thanks to the RAW format file.
IPhoto 5, released by Apple, supported the viewing and editing of many RAW files. Microsoft supports the file format by integrating the viewing and printing of the RAW data into some Microsoft Windows Tools.
