A RAF file is a Fuji digital camera RAW image that seeks to preserve all the data captured during the time of exposure. The image is unprocessed and as a result, colors and all the other components remain in their original form. There is a wide dynamic range of gamut on the raw image compared to a developed image.
Fuji cameras such as the high-end FinePix model are used to take the raw images before processing the images into other formats. The images capture the radiometric characteristics of the scene according to the geometry of the sensor's photoreceptive elements. Metadata of the image can be useful in any database or CMS environment. It also has metadata sections that are standardized with the data being in form of Exit format.
To view the RAW image on an LCD panel, it might be necessary to convert the image into JPEG. The images also have indicators showing the byte-ordering of the image.
Decoding is the first step of converting the Fuji RAW images to compress the data. Other important steps in decoding include demosaicing and tone reproduction so that the result can have distinctive features.
