PowerPoint Presentation, now called Microsoft PowerPoint, is presentation software. PowerPoint (PPT) is used to create a file called a ‘presentation,’ or ‘deck’ contains a sequence of pages that usually have a consistent style (from template masters).
Information on the PPT files may have been imported from other apps or created in PowerPoint. This information may be in the form of text, bullet lists, tables, drawn shapes, charts, images, audio clips, video clips, animations of elements, and animated transitions between slides and the attached notes for each slide.
It was developed by Robert Gaskins and Dennis Austin at a software company known as Forethought Inc. It was initially released for Macintosh computers only on April 20, 1987. Three months later, Microsoft bought it for $14 million. It was Microsoft’s first significant acquisition, after which they set up a new business unit for PowerPoint in Silicon Valley. PowerPoint first became a component of the Microsoft Office Suite for Macintosh in 1989, and later for Windows in 1990, which bundled several Microsoft apps.
After creating a Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation file, by typical operation, it is presented as a slide show using a portable computer, where it is then projected to a live audience by a speaker. It is prevalent among businesses and students for presentation purposes. In Microsoft 2007 and newer versions, the PPT format has been replaced by the PPTX format.
