PEF or Pentax Raw is a raw image format associated with Pentax digital cameras. A file with the .pef file extension is an uncompressed and unedited image file. Since the images are yet to be processed, they are large files. RAW files are the best formats for editing as they retain more data from each scene. To edit the PEF file, you need to convert it to TIFF, JPEG, or PNG.
Pentax Raw photos are sometimes in the PTX format. Both PTX and PEF files are homogenous to other image file formats used by digital cameras to store unmodified data, such as Nikon’s NEF, Canon’s CR2 and CRW, Panasonic’s RW2, Olympus’ ORF, and Sony’s ARW.
It’s important to note that some PEF files may instead be Portable Embosser Format files that use the XML format to represent physical braille books, hence their name PEF Braille Book files.
Pentax Raw image files open with a software that comes with the Pentax digital cameras as well as with UFRaw, Able RAWer, Adobe Photoshop, Windows Live Photo Gallery, Adobe Photoshop Elements, and with other popular photo and graphic tools.
