Open eBook (OEB) is a legacy e-book format that has been overridden by the EPUB format. OEB was formally called the Open eBook Publication Structure (OEBPS). It was developed by the Open eBook Forum, which comprised of organizations involved in electronic publishing. This forum was later known as International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF). The filename extension of OEB is .opf.
It was primarily based on technology developed on XML text by SoftBook Press. The format comprised of a set of files, including a compulsory package file, which incorporates a manifest listing all the other component files and a ‘spine,’ which indicates logical reading order. It was a ZIP file as well as a Manifest file.
OEB launched with a free version belonging to the public domain and a full version, which was to be used with or without DRM by the publishing industry. Inside the package, a defined subset of XHTML, CSS, and Dublin Core metadata may be used. In addition to these core formats, a reader for OEB publications must be able to render still images in JPEG and PNG formats.
The succeeding EPUB format is the most widely used e-book format, supported by the majority of e-book readers except Amazon Kindle.
