OpenDocument Spreadsheet (ODS) is a spreadsheet file that was developed under the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS) consortium. The Calc Program created the file, and it is included with the Apache OpenOffice suite. It uses the OASIS OpenDocument XML based standard, and it is one of the subtypes of the Open Document Formats (ODF).
ODS format supports editing by the users. The data is stored in rows or columns, and the files are easily converted to other spreadsheets formats like XLS and XLSX. Calc mainly uses the ODS file to save spreadsheets, just like the way Microsoft Excel uses the xlsx file to save spreadsheets. It is used mostly in schools, workplaces, and even home environments.
The ODS file consists of subdocuments packaged as zip archives that store a section of the complete document. One of the subdocuments could have style information, while another could comprise the content of the document.
There are high expectations for having the file format become the standard format used in the sharing of documents. So far, the ODF adoption has increased in the public sector, and most governments have made it the standard format for some specific context.
Applications and operating systems like Microsoft Excel, NeoOffice, and Libre Office can not only open but also manipulate the ODS files.
