Multiple Network Graphic (MNG) is a Graphics file format that was produced in 2001 for use with animation images. There is a free software available for use to the public as the file is publicly documented. The file format was releases as a modification to the Portable Network Graphics (PNG). The PNG had been released without the animation feature, which is what was now incorporated in the MNG file. The file can hold animation, video and audios into one.
Its features are closely related to those of PNG. The only difference is in aspect of chunks used in MNG for animation. Images in MNG files are stored as JNEG or as PNG images. There are two versions of MNG based on its complexity i.e. MNG–LC (low complexity) and MNG-VLC (very low complexity). The MNG compression can be lossy or lossless based on whether the frames are encoded in JNG or PNG respectively.
Until 2003, Mozilla browser and Netscape (web browser) had adapted support for MNG. The support seized when the code was removed due to little usage which received numerous complaints. Google Chrome, Opera, Internet Explorer and Safari (web browser) never included MNG support.
MNG developers hoped it would take the place of GIF animations. That was quickly forgotten after its low attraction on web support.
