Matroska (MKV) multimedia is a container format that is capable of storing limitless number of pictures, video, audio or even subtitle tracks in one file. It is one of the known universal formats that is used to store multimedia contents like TV shows and movies.
Just like other container types like the Audio Video Interleave and MP4 the containers have the same concept though MKV uses an Open source software. Matroska video files do not use or need any compression. It can incorporate video files into a single file even when there are different types of encoding needed.
The container format allows future changes to be made on the container thanks to its use of Extensible Binary Meta Language. Their is coming up with a container format that is not only flexible but also modern and extensible. They also aspire to have libraries adopt the matroska support to their applications.
Matroska uses the .mkv file extension. Since its founding, matroska has been supported by a non –profit organization which is based in France. It is a Royalty-free standnard that is available to both private and commercial consumers free of charge.
Microsoft since October 2014 announced that Windows 10 would be supporting MKV Out of the box (feature). The confirmation led to Windows 10 adding a platform that offered support for Matroska.
