Free Lossless Audio Codec File ( FLAC) is an audio coding format used for lossless compression. The Xiph.Org Foundation incorporated it in the year 2003. Since its incorporation, the file format has remained free for use by the public. No particular patent licenses its encoding and decoding, and so they are freely used by the public.
FLAC compression reduces files to range between 50 and 70 percent of its original size. The file format is capable of decompressing compressed files to their original data. FLAC audio files are preferred compared to MP3 or WMA.
Cd owners can archive their data using FLAC as it is lossless and is easily decoded. FLAC also retrieves lost data and reproduces it as the original file. It is also suitable for transcoding without the risk of losing the quality of the said files. Almost all common media players can play FLAC files. If not, install an extension or plugin, and it’s good to go.
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) uses the FLAC formart to distribute their audios. Windows OS also supports the use of the format FLAC since the release of Windows 10. The Android (operating_system), macOS High Sierra, and IOS natively support FLAC playback. Blackberry 10 and Jolla are among devices that include FLAC support.
