- Description
- FBX, FilmBox, is a popular 3D file format that was originally developed by Kaydara for MotionBuilder. It was acquired by Autodesk Inc in 2006 and is now one of the main 3D exchange formats as used by many 3D tools.

FBX is a 3D file format saved in the Autodesk Filmbox format. The file is very popular in game development and animation and it was designed to share 3D modeling designs across various CAD applications. It was developed by Kaydara for their motion capture technology in 1996. However, in 2006, Autodesk acquired it. It is very similar to DAE and OBJ as it stores 3D modeling information including full scene information, special effects, texture, color, lighting, and animation. The FBX format supports NURBS (non-uniform rational B-spline) features, making it possible to create precise mathematical computation of a digital curve or surface. Like OBJ, it contains data on model positioning topography increasing dimensional precision for FBX models. With the FBX file format, you can move 3D models and their data ( i.e texture and lighting, for instance) across different CAD programs. The effects stored in FBX are transferable across platforms as long as the programs are compatible with the effects. The only catch is that FBX is a proprietary, or a “closed format”, so it can only work with programs with an FBX file-supporting SDK. Autodesk (available in C++) and Blender (available in Python) provide an SDK to read and write FBX files. One can exchange information between 3ds Max, Maya, MotionBuilder, Mudbox, and other propriety and third-party software.
