It is a computer file that keeps scanned documents safely. Though initially created at AT & T Labs, the DjVu was sold to Lizard Tech Inc.
DjVu is an image compression technology developed to help in scanning physical documents or images at a high resolution. It allows scanning of any text or pictures which are colored at high resolution and make them available online.
The compression of DjVu is ten times better than that of other file formats like GIF and JPEG. The reduction of the image sizes happens separately for the various types of images. The file has an outstanding feature that makes it a separate background layer from the foreground layer. Separating the image using DjVu allows maintaining of the text at a high resolution. The final images are flexible and remain legible too.
Users of DjVu format enjoy the display of many pages at the same time. The already computed thumbnails in the format are responsible for allowing the users to download thumbnails rather than the real page. The format enabled a lot of updating of information online, which had initially not been exposed there.
No known web browser or application chose DjVu as a default feature. The format was, however, in 2002 selected by Internet Archive for their Million Book Project. Wikimedia Commons allows DjVu Media files.
