Comic Book RAR Archive (CBR) is an archive file used for sequential viewing of images. The CBR is commonly used in comic books. CDisplay was the reason behind the popularity of the CBR file.
The file is made up of Image files which have specified names. Either the Portable Network Graphics (PNG) or the JPEG files can be archived in this format. PNG uses Lossless compression while JPEG uses Lossy compression. BMP, GIF, or TIFF files occasionally appear on the CBR archive file. Images in CBR files are grouped in folders.
The CBR file may have metadata, which is stored as an XML file though the format neither has an open format nor a DTD schema. The Filename extension for this format varies depending on the type of archive in use. The extension used may include; 7z, ACE, ZIP, or Tar.
CBR viewers can read content, move backward or forward on a page, zoom or print a page, and lastly, go to the first or last page. There are, however, some CBR supporting applications that allow additional tag information on the file. The data could be about the artists, table of content, information about a story, or a book translation layer.
Calibre, CDisplay, Comic Seer (Desktop), Gonvisor, STDU Viewer, and SumatraPDF are among windows application that adopted and supported the CBR file formats.
