AOMedia Video 1 (AV1) is a Royalty free Video coding format developed by Alliance for Open Media(AOMedia). A pretty new format in the market as it was released in 2018. The founders of AV1 intended to deliver web videos of high quality at an affordable cost. The format is an Open Media type that transmits videos over the internet. The video codec used by AV1 achieves high data compression compared to libvpx-vp9.
AV1 is meant for Lossy compression, although it works with lossless compression too. Its images have few rounding errors due to the massive procession in internal processing. AVI design supports both real-time applications and higher resolutions like Gamuts and Ultra high definition television(UHD).
The file offers more encoding options as it uses VP9 from Google. The file format can adapt to varying types of input due to its additional encoding techniques. Thanks to their high compression abilities, Netflix adopted AV1 for streaming light, select titles on Androids. Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera, and Microsoft_Edge are among the AV1 software support browsers.
Even the Chinese had to come on board. IQIYI, a Chinese video streaming site on April 30, 2020, announced its support for AVI. They are the first and only Chinese video streaming site to adopt the AVI format for PC web browsers and Android device users.
