It is an Autodesk binary format file that holds mesh data, bitmap references, camera locations, material attributes, lighting information, viewpoint configurations, and smoothing group data. These files may also contain animation data. All these details are stored in blocks of data known as chunks which have the length and ID description of each object. The chunks are what create a 3-dimensional scene by storing lighting, shape, and viewpoint information. Over the years, it has become clear that the .3ds format isn’t the best for storing 3D information. This is because it only limits you to creating triangular meshes and the texture filenames can only be in the 8.3 DOS format. In addition, you have a 10 character limit for your objects, camera, and light names. And when imported or exported it only retails the important texture, geometry, and lighting data. For these reasons, 3DS has been replaced with the Autodesk 3DS MAX format. Yes, it is still popular but the.MAX file extension is taking over as it allows you to save and load an entire scene. 3DS file extensions can be opened using Autodesk 3DS Max application, MeshLab, Adobe Photoshop, MAXON Cinema 4D, and CAD SoftTools ABViewer. You can also have a 3DS video game file. Very common with the Nintendo 3DS. Any gamer that loves playing discontinued games on their PC has come across a 3DS file. One can open these files using Citra or TronDS.
